A super special power inverter.?
I am a big green energy enthusiast, and I’ve been looking at various big name brands and wasn’t able to find what I’m looking for, so I decided to ask my you guys, if you can tell me, if what I’m looking for exists and makes sense.
I’m looking for an inverter, that’s a “hybrid inverter”, so it can take power from the grid, like a grid-tied inverter, and also work as an off-grid inverter. So basically it would be an inverter that can connect my PV array to my load, and also to the grid.
If for some reason I don’t have power from the grid for a few hours, I can still run my critical load, from the power stored in batteries (battery bank).
Most inverters that I looked at, are only grid-tied, (can not connect to batteries), or off-grid (can not connect to grid), That’s why I said, I need a “hybrid inverter”. That can do both jobs with one machine.

All grid tied inverters can work while the grid is down. The difference between a grid tied inverter and just an inverter is that the control circuitry can synchronize the frequency and phase to that of the grid before a relay connects the two. When the grid is down, the transfer switch simply disconnects the inverter and your house from the grid. When grid powered is restored, the circuitry waits for the phase to line up, connects the two and ensures that the frequency remains synced.
In a power engineering lab, we had to connect a motor generator set to the power mains the old pre-electronics way. It was a lightbulb hooked between the alternator and the mains and a big relay, you adjusted the frequency with a knob till the lightbulb was pulsing very slowly and then threw the relay when the lightbulb was out. If someone connected their alternator to the grid at the wrong time, sparks would fly, tables got charred, fires would start and the lights to the entire building would dim. You pretty much knew when you had an idiot in the lab session regardless of where you were. All a grid tied inverter is, is that it has the electronic equivalent of a student watching a lightbulb, turning the knob and throwing the switch when the grid comes back up.
You just made up the term “Hybrid inverter” and “Super Special Power Inverter”. If your grid tied inverter isn’t able to provide power off grid then someone connected up the inverter wrong, have a qualified electrician check out the transfer switch and the installation. The secret to disconnecting from the grid is in the transfer switch.
