I don’t actually know about either one, but as an engineer I’d suspect that either one needs some kind of output regulator. Especially a crank one, or you’d overload the battery you’re charging. So I guess it’s a matter of cost, whether you want to do the work, yourself, for a couple hours, or let it do the work for you. And solar doesn’t work so well when there isn’t a Sol to provide solar energy into the solar cells.

If you have an electrical engineer friend, they can get a DVM to measure the current drawn by your light, then help you go shopping for the right value resistor at (say) Radio Shack.
