I don’t actually know about either one, but as an engineer I’d suspect that either one needs some kind of output regulator. Especially a crank one, or you’d overload the battery you’re charging. So I guess it’s a matter of cost, whether you want to do the work, yourself, for a couple hours, or let it do the work for you. And solar doesn’t work so well when there isn’t a Sol to provide solar energy into the solar cells.

I’m writing a novella (basically a short novel). In it, one of the the two main characters, along with parts of the Earth, are switched with land corresponding to those same areas from the 1300′s. As you can imagine, communication is a neccesity. Based on aid that I got for my novella, I was told that using BlackBerries (or at least a similar device) that were solar powered-equipped would facilitate communication. My question is: do such devices exist? They can be on the drawing board, but the cutoff date is mid-June of 2007.

I don’t know if you can get one from the factory that is solar-powered, but there are certainly small portable solar chargers… I’ve seen a lot of them on top of trucks here in Reno… They are solar trickle-chargers… Even if you used one of those, and you’d only need a car-adapter (like the ones you plug into the car’s lighter) to power your blackberry… Problem solved. A blackberry could be powered (charged every night, or every day) with a Solar-powered Car/Truck battery trickle charger with a lighter adapter. TADA!!!

For backpacking, size and weight are everything. I would just take a small, slim, point-and-shoot camera. It will still take decent pictures, and will probably have zoom and video. Then, buy extra batteries and carry them with you. Make sure that all the batteries are charged before you leave, of course. I think you’ll be surprised at how long a fresh battery lasts when fully charged. When we went on vacation in Hawaii for 3 weeks, we charged the camera batteries once in the middle, and that was it.

What’s wrong with my computer charger/battery?

I have a Sony VAIO VGN-CR220E laptop, i have had it for about 2 years. I noticed a while back that my battery would only last about thirty minutes as compared to the 2 1/2 hours it used to last. Yesterday, my battery charger/ AC adapter died. this is the second one that i have had die. I went and bought a universal charger for it. The universal charger worked the first time I plugged it in, and slightly extended battery life. The second time i plugged it in, the computer will not charge, it says it is charging, but the meter stays at 0% and if i unplug it my laptop dies. It will not charge the battery, and can run plugged in without the battery in. What is the problem and how do i fix it?

You need a new battery. The battery’s life gradually reduces with the passage of time, and eventually it dies. You should be glad yours lasted 2 years. Lots of batteries hardly last that long nowadays.
