Deep cycle marine battery running trolling motor?
How long should a deep cycle battery run a 40 lb thrust trolling motor? Im not constantly using it trolling or anything. Its only been lasting me about 3 hours after charging on the 2 amp setting all night. Its a 10 ft plastic boat and the battery is less than a year old.
Well first of all if you have been charging a (for example) 50 amp hour battery @ 2 amps for 10 hours you would only have managed to charge it to 40% of it’s capacity.
This would rapidly cause the battery to sulfate and fail.
Should your troll motor pull say 20 A at WOT (wide open throttle) then you would be lucky to get more than two hours anyway, so that would be about right.
A slow charge is excellent for the battery, but must be for long enough to actually bring it to full potential. A 50 A/hr battery from dead flat might take over 27 hours to fully charge at 2 A (allowing for losses of ten percent in the charging process) – but a battery should never be pulled down below 70% DOD (depth of discharge) anyway – unless it is an AGM (absorbent glass mat) or other type like nicad or Li-ion made to be pulled right down (even these don’t like getting drained past 95% by the way).
Don’t get sucked in by the sales patter – a deep cycle lead acid battery has thicker plates to allow a steady low rate discharge and recharge cycle, it is really a ‘less shallow cycle’ battery compared to a start battery which is made purely to deliver extremely high current for a few seconds to start an engine – nothing else after that as the alternator runs all power needs once the engine starts. That’s why a car battery can’t deal with a series of full discharges. (And no they can’t – doesn’t matter what level of wishful thinking you have about that, I have seen a four day old battery (top quality) reverse polarity after one extreme over-discharge event.)
You need to get a good quality three stage charger, and allow it to run a full charge cycle to bring your battery up to it’s full remaining capacity (it sounds like there may already be capacity reduction), then if you divide the current draw of your motor by the amp hour rating of your battery you can work out how long you should get. You could hook up an automotive ammeter between the battery and the load to confirm the actual load. I fit these often to the battery box as it’s the only way of being sure of the draw – at a glance you know what’s happening.
Also if the battery was particularly cheap it simply won’t have the lead in it in the first place – the urban myth that a Chinese battery built for $30 and then sold in a chain store for $75 is somehow better than a top quality battery built of top shelf materials and proven design for $200 is just that, a myth. Nearly all the name brands have a ‘budget’ range of product because plenty of people want to ‘just get going’ – bottom line is you get what you pay for. However it makes little difference how good the battery is if it doesn’t get charged correctly.
I only use and fit top end batteries, solar panels and multi stage chargers for myself and clients (including State Govt. rescue vehicles), I never got less than five years of full commercial use from any of my batteries as a fisherman and find the cheap stuff is the most expensive way to go in the long term.
