Are high-efficiency washing machines worth the extra money?
We are considering purchasing one of the high-efficiency front loading washing machines, specifically the Maytag Neptune. We are wondering if the water savings are truly large enough to justify the high price of this washing machine. Does anyone have this model, or a similar one? Does it work well, do you notice a savings in your water usage, and would you recommend it?
Well I guess that’s for each person to decide themselves. They do save water, detergent, time (due to the fact you can fit bigger loads in at once), and energy (they spin better so clothes are much more dry before they even get into the dryer). There’s also the fact that they are gentler on the clothes, while getting them cleaner than your standard top-loader.
Just beware- Maytag had a class-action suit a few years back for the Neptunes (google ‘Maytag class action suit’ for more info on the issues). There were a few problems with them, which have supposedly been fixed, but you should definitely know that and consider it before you buy one.
We ended up ordering one about a week ago so we are currently just waiting on delivery. We did a lot of research on the net, epinions.com, etc and went to our local Sears Outlet where all the returned machines are to have a look in to the future, so to speak. We were specifically worried about the mold/smell issue with front-loaders, so we wanted to see if some brands were worse than others (as it turns out, even expensive brands like LG seemed to have the same problem, and one Kenmore model was particularly bad due to some gill-like things in the door seal gasket which would prevent proper drainage and leave a LOT of standing water). We ended up deciding that we would just have to be careful to wipe out the door seal and air out the machine out after each day’s use to avoid any issues of mildew growth in the machine. We also forked out the $129 for the extended 5 year warranty, just in case 
I highly recommend doing your homework before making your choice and deciding if it’s worth it to you.
