How do I hook up my solar panel to a fountain?
I made a solar panel, it gives out 21 volts in the sun, 16 in cloud cover. I have a 200 watt power inverter and a small fountain that plugs into the power inverter.
What do I need before the panel hooks up to the power inverter, some sort of voltage regulator i assume.. Any specifics? I have a charge controller but that doesnt work without a battery, and I dont want to go and buy a deep cycle batter for the fountain.
I want the fountain to turn on when the sun hits it in the morning, and shut off when the sun sets in the evening.

Hey Math, the only way to get your fountain to work directly on your panel is to find a DC pump that runs at a voltage below your panels voltage, but at about the same amperage as your panel. They sell kits that do this in solar catalogs, with a pump and panel already balanced for each other. Since you’ve already built the panel, the challenge will be to find a pump that fits it.
You said your open circuit voltage is about 21, in panel terms, this is referred to as VOC, or volts open circuit. You measure it by putting your panel in the sun and taking a volt reading with nothing else hooked to the panel but your voltmeter. Now you need an ammeter, do the same test with nothing else hooked to the panel, and see how many amps it can put out. Let’s assume for discussion that your panels short circuit current rating is 2.4 amps. If you go to a marine supply website, you can look through the 12 volt bilge pumps and find one that uses about that amount of amps. If you hook it straight to the panel, when the sun is shining on the panel adequately in the morning, the pump will begin to run, slowly at first, then at full speed in the middle third of the day, then slow down in the evening until it stops.
In my experience, a pump used this way is good for about a year, then it wears out, and you have to get another. These are generally inexpensive pumps, a 360 GPH 12 volt bilge pump might cost around $24 if you shop around, but then you don’t need anything else, batteries, controllers, inverters or anything. That size pump uses about 2 amps at full power, 2.5 amps would be just fine. If your panel puts out more than 3 amps, look for a larger pump, they come in lots of sizes.
The problem with the inverter is they need either a battery or the power grid to regulate their output, you can’t hook an inverter straight to your panel, it won’t carry any load, and probably will not even turn on because your panel voltage is too high at 21 volts. Most 12 volt inverters only work between 11 and 15 volts or so, outside of that, they shut down. Once you hook a panel to a battery, it’s voltage drops down to charge voltage to match the battery, so then the inverter has a voltage it can use. So if you don’t want to spring for the battery, then skip the controller and find your panels amp limit, then shop for a cheap DC pump.
