Is it possible make methanol (a catalyst for making biodiesel)?
Methanol is an ingredient in one process for making biodiesel from vegetable oil. I’m interested in producing methanol (or alternatively ethanol) myself rather than purchasing it.
Both types of alcohol can be made by fermentation/distillation, but that takes a while and it will be difficult to get a pure product. There is an industrial process for making methanol, which is described in the link below, but it is a complicated process requiring special equipment. So practically, the answer is no – methanol is inexpensive anyway, so just purchasing it would be the best and only solution.
