Can you draw more than 50 amps out of a 50 amp hour car battery?
For example can you run a 700 watt (~60amp @ 12v) microwave with a 12v 50AH car battery? I know this probably wouldn’t be a good idea but just wondering.
Yes. The limit is commonly called “cold cranking amps” and it can be in the hundreds for a car battery. But you can’t do this for long because the battery will heat up.
I think that such a battery could certainly power a microwave for some minutes with no problem, so long as it has a “rest” period to cool down and let the electrolytes redistribute themselves. It won’t be super-efficient, but it will work.
If you run the microwave at a lower power setting this will be more efficient because the ‘wave pulses power on and off – exactly what a lead-acid battery needs to work its best.
Marine and “deep cycle” batteries tolerate high-amp drain better – worth considering if you have lots of food to nuke.
